KUPA KENEE™

Othaya Farmer's Cooperative Society (FCS) is comprised of 18 wet mills ("factories"), and dates back to the late 1950s. We've carried coffee separations from several Othaya factories over the past couple years, including Kamoini, Chinga, Gatugi, Ichamama, and more. These factories range from around 1700 meters to 2000, and members grow a mix of SL-28, SL-34, and Ruiru-11. This 20 bag lot is a blend of AA screen separations from each of their factories. AA refers to bean size, which in the case of Kenya, are the largest "17 - 19 screen" (measured in 1/64ths of an inch). Depending on your roast set up this might mean a few extra seconds in the roaster than you're used to in order to hit your roast targe, ensuring internal bean temperature has a chance to catch up to the exterior. This later arrival Kenya from Othaya is still cupping with a delicious fruited side and citric vibrance that we expect from the origin. The sweetness in the dry grounds is like fruit jam, orange marmalade and even blueberry come to mind in a roast that was somewhere between City+ and Full City. There's a slight woodiness noticeable when wetting the grounds, but the break is overcome with tropical fruit and citrus smells. Cupping a City+ roast you're treated with flavors of ruby red grapefruit, blackberry, and ripe papaya. The coffee is pectin-sweet, fruit spreads and juices coming to mind as you move through the cup. Chocolate roast tones come into focus as the coffee cools in temp, but at City+, still plays much more of a background role to layered fruit aspects. Acidity rides high in comparison to most Latin American coffees, but citrus-like expressions felt in the cup are on the tamer side in comparison to our brightest Kenya offers. Last one of the season as we make room for new arrivals very soon!
